Providence, RI (February 2017) – Medication-related adverse events are affecting record numbers of Medicare beneficiaries in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioids—including prescription drugs and heroin—killed more than 33,000 people in the U.S. in 2015. Among Medicare beneficiaries, six out of every 1,000 beneficiaries has an opioid misuse disorder—one of the fastest growing rates in the nation.

The New England Quality Innovation Network – Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) is addressing this issue by implementing strategies to help better manage patients’ use of opioids across the care continuum.
