Recently, the innovative respite care program Healthcentric Advisors supports through Rhode Island’s Nursing Student Respite Initiative received national recognition for its vital work supporting caregivers.

Working alongside The Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging, the Family Caregiver Alliance of Rhode Island, United Way of Rhode Island, Catholic Social Services of Rhode Island, and Rhode Island’s undergraduate nursing programs we aim to enhance and expand the availability of respite services in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island’s Nursing Student Respite Initiative provides no-cost respite services for family caregivers and offers an important clinical experience for students. Family caregivers are identified through the Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging’s CareBreaks program, managed by Catholic Social Services. Over the last five years, the initiative expanded from Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island’s nursing programs to include Salve Regina University, the New England Institute of Technology, and the Community College of Rhode Island. Last year,
we created a video showcasing the incredible work done within the CareBreaks program’s student initiative and its impact on families and individuals within Rhode Island.

The program and video were highlighted in a national report “In Support of Caregivers: Key Accomplishments of Lifespan Respite Program Grantees” by ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center. The report highlighted our contributions towards creating a stronger workforce. We’re excited to be in the report alongside other Lifespan Respite Care Program partners from all over the country.

What is CareBreaks?

CareBreaks is a service that provides unpaid caregivers a short-term break from the daily responsibility of caregiving while their loved ones receive supervision and personal care from a qualified individual.

The primary goal of respite care is to restore the balance between caring for others and caring for yourself. A cost-share program, CareBreaks, helps arrange for a short-term break for those who care for a friend or loved one located in Rhode Island.
